How professional turf is prepared and laid for a better result

The finished lawn is only the visible part of the job. Most of the work that determines the result happens before the first slab of turf is placed.

Step 1: remove the old lawn, weeds and debris

We begin by getting the area as free from old turf, weeds, rocks, roots and building debris as reasonably possible. Depending on the condition and size of the yard, this may involve hand work, excavation or machinery through our Bobcat operator.

Where chemical weed control is appropriate, a suitable herbicide is applied strictly according to its product label. We allow it at least 48 hours to work, but the required interval may be considerably longer depending on the product, weeds and site conditions. In some cases the area needs to be left until the existing weeds have fully died before preparation continues.

Step 2: establish the levels and drainage

The ground is cleared, cultivated or loosened where required, then shaped to remove unwanted highs and lows. We aim to create practical falls that encourage water to move away from buildings and problem areas.

For suitable sites, drainage improvements may be included. These measures are intended to help move water away, but no lawn preparation or drainage system can guarantee against the extreme and unpredictable rainfall that occurs in Far North Queensland.

Step 3: add and prepare the under-turf soil

Quality under-turf soil is installed where required, with Tableland topsoil our preferred product where it suits the site. The soil is spread, levelled and prepared to leave room for the turf beside paths, driveways and garden edges.

A turf-starter fertiliser or appropriate soil treatment is then spread evenly through the prepared area. This puts nutrients beneath the new turf, where developing roots can access them during establishment.

Step 4: picture-frame the outside

We like to begin by laying a clean border around the outside of the lawn—a picture frame. This creates a strong, tidy edge along paths, gardens and boundaries and gives us a defined area to work within.

Step 5: stagger the turf through the middle

Inside the picture frame, the turf is laid in a staggered brick or checker-block pattern rather than lining every join up in one continuous row. The slabs are fitted tightly without overlapping.

Staggering the joins gives the lawn a stronger layout and avoids creating long, uninterrupted channels through the turf. This helps reduce the opportunity for water to follow the same joint lines and form ruts or wash soil away while the new lawn is establishing.

Why a newly laid lawn may not look perfectly flat

Turf is a natural, farm-grown product. Slabs can arrive with slight variations in soil thickness, moisture and density. Even with careful ground preparation and laying, the lawn may show small highs, lows, joins or colour differences on the first day.

The first priority is to get the turf down promptly, achieve good soil contact and establish a healthy root system. As the lawn knits together and receives regular mowing, its appearance becomes more consistent.

Topdressing creates the higher-end finish

If the goal is an especially smooth and level lawn, topdressing can be completed after the turf has established. A suitable fine material is spread into minor low areas and joins, helping refine the surface without smothering the grass.

Topdressing is part of developing the finish over time; it should not be confused with trying to force a freshly laid natural product to look like finished carpet on day one.

Step 6: water immediately and support establishment

Watering should begin as the turf is installed, not hours after the whole yard is finished. The lawn then needs consistent watering through establishment, adjusted for the turf variety, weather, soil and drainage at the property.
